Senior Radar Systems Engineer
About this role
Nuro is hiring a Senior Radar Systems Engineer, full-time, on-site in Mountain View, California (HQ), in the Autonomous Delivery sector.
Who We Are
Nuro believes self-driving vehicles are the most immediate and profound opportunity for AI to drive positive change in the physical world. Safer streets, more time for what matters, and easier access to the world around us, that’s why we’re building a universal autonomy platform: self-driving for all roads and all rides.
Founded in 2016, Nuro is a physical AI company developing Level 4 autonomous driving technology for a wide range of vehicles, use cases, and markets. Powered by the Nuro Driver™, our universal autonomy platform enables the global mobility ecosystem to deploy autonomy at scale, from robotaxis and logistics fleets to personal vehicles.
With years of real-world deployment experience and a flexible, partner-led business model, Nuro is working toward a future where millions of autonomous vehicles powered by our technology help make everyday life safer, easier, and more connected.
Nuro has raised over $2B in capital from Uber, NVIDIA, Google, Softbank, Fidelity, T. Rowe Price, and other leading investors.
About the Team
Our Sensors Engineering Team is the backbone of our self-driving system's perception, responsible for selecting, developing, testing and integrating the full suite of sensors that power our autonomous vehicles. This critical group has end-to-end ownership of the hardware, drivers, and system-level integration for core sensors like cameras, lidar and radar, as well as ancillary components such as Inertial Measurement Units and microphones. We are a highly collaborative, multidisciplinary team that works in lockstep with our Software Infrastructure, Mechanical Design, and Supplier Management partners to ensure our vehicles perceive the world accurately, reliably, and safely
About the Role
We’re looking for a Senior Radar System Engineer to guide the technical strategy, evaluation, and supplier development of Nuro’s radar sensing capability. You’ll set technical direction, raise the bar on how we evaluate and select sensors, and mentor the engineers working alongside you.
This is a deep, hands-on role for someone who has designed radar systems and understands them end to end, from antennas and MMICs to DSP and the supply chain behind them. Your expertise will shape how Nuro defines excellence in radar. You’ll set the standard for our hardware, evaluate the best sensors in the market against it, and work with suppliers to build the capabilities our autonomous driving system needs.
- Influence suppliers: Work directly with vendors on component level decisions and with Tier 1 module suppliers on system-level performance, cost, and reliability. You’ll build long lasting partnerships with key players.
- Balance cost and performance: Make trade offs between price, manufacturability, and performance so our sensor choices are technically excellent and commercially viable at scale.
- Connect teams: Partner with Perception, Systems, and Product to turn their needs into clear sensor requirements, and bring supply base insights to leadership to build an actionable roadmap.
About the Work
- Set the technical direction for our Radar evaluation and selection strategy
- Define Radar performance requirements, specifications, and evaluation criteria, grounded in real downstream perception and system needs.
- Build, run, and standardize rigorous bench and in-context evaluation methodologies for candidate Radar sensors.
- Drive supplier engagements at both Tier 1 and Tier 2 levels, influencing component roadmaps and full-module designs to align with our requirements.
- Lead technical due diligence on Radar vendors and technologies, producing clear comparative assessments and recommendations.
- Mentor and grow the existing Radar team.
- Partner with Perception, Software, and Mechanical teams to ensure Radar selections integrate cleanly into the broader sensing and compute architecture.
- Build and maintain strong, long-term partnerships across the Radar supply base, joint development programs, and relevant industry/standards bodies.
- Communicate technical roadmaps, trade-offs, and recommendations clearly to engineering peers and executive stakeholders.
About You
- B.S., M.S., or Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering,Telecommunication, Physics, Computer Engineering, or a related technical field.
- 6+ years of professional engineering experience, with substantial hands-on work on Radar or closely adjacent sensing systems.
- Deep, demonstrable expertise in Radar fundamentals: link budget, antenna technologies, signal processing (FFT, CFAR, detection) and design tradeoffs.
- Demonstrated ability to balance price and performance, making sound engineering and commercial trade-offs around cost, manufacturability, and capability to land on the right solution at scale.
- Proven track record of evaluating, specifying, and selecting sensor hardware, with a structured, data-driven approach to benchmarking and qualification.
- Direct experience influencing suppliers at the component (Tier 2) and module/system (Tier 1) level, including driving technical requirements from evaluation through production.
- Comprehensive understanding of the automotive Radar ecosystem, vendors, technology landscape, cost and manufacturability drivers, and emerging trends.
- Demonstrated experience mentoring engineers and elevating the technical capability of those around you.
- Familiarity with automotive or other safety-critical product cycles, including validation, reliability, and functional safety standards (e.g., ISO 26262), is strongly preferred.
- Excellent communication and presentation skills, with the ability to articulate complex technical trade-offs clearly to both expert and executive audiences.
- A collaborative, partnership-oriented approach and the credibility to build trust with internal teams and external suppliers alike.
