About this role

1X is hiring a Test Technician, full-time, on-site in Hayward, CA, in the ROBOTICS sector.

Role Name: Test Technician

Department: Manufacturing Operations

Location: San Carlos / Hayward

Shift: Morning Shift

About 1X

We’re building humanoid robots that work in any space humans exist with the mission to create an abundance of labor. Simple, but it’s not.

To do this right, we have to solve robotics, AI, software, hardware, manufacturing and operations at the same time, at scale, in a form factor that has to be safe. If you’re inspired by this, you’ll thrive here. We’ve been at this since 2014 and we’re at the point where the hard problems are behind us and the hard work is in front of us.

NEO is our flagship - a general purpose robot designed to move, learn, and operate in the real world alongside real people. We’re not demoing it, we're shipping it. We’re excited to meet you, if this excites you.

If you’ve spent your career working on problems that matter and want to see them actually reach the world - this is that moment. We’re scaling, we’re hiring with intention, and we need people who want to build something that will genuinely change how humans spend their time safely creating abundance for all.

About the Team:

Test Engineering builds and supports the test systems that verify NEO hardware meets functional and quality requirements before shipment. Working across engineering and manufacturing, the team develops and maintains test stations, fixtures, and processes that identify defects, validate performance, and support production at scale.

Your Charter:

Execute reliable, repeatable tests on NEO hardware and robotic subassemblies while maintaining test station readiness and supporting manufacturing quality. This role is critical to identifying hardware failures, improving test coverage, and ensuring production test systems consistently verify product performance as 1X scales.

Key Outcomes:

  • Execute functional, electrical, and electromechanical tests accurately and consistently against documented test plans and engineering requirements.

  • Maintain test station readiness by preparing and verifying fixtures, instrumentation, cabling, power supplies, and associated equipment.

  • Identify and troubleshoot test station and hardware failures, providing clear technical documentation and escalating issues to engineering when needed.

  • Maintain accurate test records, pass/fail results, serial number traceability, and failure reports to support quality investigations and production decisions.

  • Support timely failure reproduction, retesting, and verification to minimize production delays and prevent recurring issues.

  • Identify opportunities to improve test procedures, station reliability, and execution efficiency as production requirements evolve.

Key Competencies:

  • Hands-on technical aptitude across mechanical, electrical, and electromechanical systems.

  • Strong troubleshooting skills with a systematic approach to identifying and isolating hardware and equipment failures.

  • Detail-oriented execution with a commitment to test accuracy, data integrity, and procedural compliance.

  • Comfortable working with hand tools, test fixtures, instrumentation, and production or laboratory equipment.

  • Clear communicator who can document technical findings and collaborate effectively with engineering and manufacturing teams.

  • Takes ownership of assigned work, adapts to changing priorities, and maintains a high standard for safety and execution.

Minimum Requirements:

  • 2+ years of hands-on experience in an engineering lab, manufacturing test, electronics test, equipment maintenance, or a similar technical environment; relevant experience expectations will vary by level.

  • Practical understanding of mechanical, electrical, or electromechanical hardware.

  • Experience using hand tools and basic test equipment, such as digital multimeters and power supplies.

  • Ability to follow technical procedures, interpret test instructions, and accurately document results.

  • Basic computer skills, including working with spreadsheets and digital documentation systems.

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience supporting functional, end-of-line, reliability, or design validation testing.

  • Familiarity with digital multimeters, data acquisition systems, programmable power supplies, sensors, actuators, or motor-driven systems.

  • Ability to read electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, or mechanical drawings.

  • Experience troubleshooting PCBs, wiring harnesses, robotics, automation equipment, or complex electromechanical products.

  • Experience with manufacturing execution systems, test-data software, or root-cause investigations.

What does a successful 1X Team Member look like:

Team members at 1X who thrive here are builders. They move fast, own their work completely, and treat time like it’s the one thing you can’t get back - because it is. They say what they mean, finish what they start, and hold themselves to a standard before anyone has to ask. We push each other to be better, and we do it with honesty and respect.

Compensation Range:

$26.00 - $48.00/hr

Benefits:

  • Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage

  • Generous paid time off, company holidays, and parental leave

  • 401(k) plan with company match (100% on the first 3% of contributions, 50% on the next 2%)

  • Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA) and Health Savings Accounts (HSA) options

  • Commuter benefits (transit and parking)

  • Short-term and long-term disability, and life insurance

  • Employee Assistance Program (EAP) for mental health, financial, and personal support

  • Onsite snacks and catered lunches
