Lunar Operations Mechanical Engineer
About this role
Blue Origin is hiring a Lunar Operations Mechanical Engineer, full-time, on-site in Space Coast, FL, in the Aerospace sector.
Application close date:
Applications will be accepted on an ongoing basis until the requisition is closed.
At Blue Origin, we envision millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. We’re working to develop reusable, safe, and low-cost space vehicles and systems within a culture of safety, collaboration, and inclusion. Join our team of problem solvers as we add new chapters to the history of spaceflight!
This role is part of Blue Origin Operations, which is comprised of Integrated Supply Chain, Test Operations, Safety, Quality, and Mission Assurance. This includes Manufacturing and Supply Chain support across all Blue Origin facilities.
As part of a talented and hardworking team of engineers, you will partner with design engineering teams across structural, mechanical, fluids, ECLSS and thermal subsystems at Blue Origin Lunar Plant 1. You'll own assembly and test tooling and fixtures, and perform first-pass sizing analysis, with the tooling analyst owning final validation. You will work every day with design engineers, analysts, manufacturing engineers, technicians and quality, and you will be the person who makes designs buildable.
Responsibilities
- Own tooling design end to end: gather needs from production and design; build concepts and trades; carry each tool through review, release, fabrication, proof and first use. Examples include assembly and alignment fixtures, bonding and layup tools, drill and trim jigs, handling and lifting equipment, transport fixtures, inspection gauges and test fixtures.
- Support lander hardware design: build models, assemblies and drawings for structural, mechanical, fluids (tubing, brackets, routing), ECLSS and thermal hardware (MLI, heaters, thermal hardware installs) alongside the owning design engineers. Build and evaluate physical prototypes, conduct tests and compile performance data. Prepare technical reports, update bills of materials (BOMs) and maintain clear documentation for design changes.
- Produce release-quality CAD: 3D models, assemblies and drawings in Creo, managed in Windchill, with GD&T and tolerance stack-ups; keep models and BOMs clean through change.
- Design for build: choose materials, fasteners and processes that suit the shop and flight-hardware contact (cleanliness, outgassing, FOD); run DFx reviews on hardware designs.
- Close the loop with analysis: define loads and use cases, size parts with hand calcs, perform basic stress analyses and tolerance stack-ups, and update the design based on the analyst's results.
- Support production and suppliers: resolve design- and tooling-related NCs, write tooling specs, review vendor designs and accept delivered tools.
-
Minimum Qualifications (required)
- Bachelor of Science in Mechanical, Manufacturing or Aerospace Engineering (other relevant fields may apply) from an accredited university.
- Understanding of materials, thermodynamics, kinematics and manufacturing processes.
- Proficiency in CAD systems (e.g., SolidWorks, Creo, CATIA) and familiarity with FEA/CFD simulation tools.
- Hands-on build experience: you have taken a design you own through fabrication and test.
- Familiarity with ASME Y14.5 Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T) and tolerance stack-up analysis.
Desired
- Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related field.
- Passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam.
- Experience in ANSYS.
- Experience in PTC Creo/Windchill.
- Experience across more than one discipline: structures, mechanisms, fluid systems, ECLSS or thermal.
- Tube and harness routing, sheet metal, composites or weldment design.
- Cleanroom, flight-hardware handling or contamination-control experience.
Culture Statement
Don’t meet all desired requirements? Studies have shown that some people are less likely to apply to jobs unless they meet every single desired qualification. At Blue Origin, we are dedicated to building an authentic workplace, so if you’re excited about this role but your past experience doesn’t align perfectly with every desired qualification in the job description, we encourage you to apply anyway. You may be just the right candidate for this or other roles.
