BIM Specialist - Mechanical Systems Modeling (Starbase)
About this role
SpaceX is hiring a BIM Specialist - Mechanical Systems Modeling (Starbase), full-time, on-site in Starbase, TX, in the Aerospace sector.
SpaceX was founded under the belief that a future where humanity is out exploring the stars is fundamentally more exciting than one where we are not. Today SpaceX is actively developing the technologies to make this possible, with the ultimate goal of enabling human life on Mars.
BIM SPECIALIST (MECHANICAL SYSTEMS MODELING)
Building on the rapid advancement of the Starship program, SpaceX is seeking to rapidly develop and retrofit launch infrastructure facilities to support vehicle builds and re-flight refurbishments. We are seeking a Building Information Modeling (BIM) Specialist to lead the modeling, integration and coordination of electrical systems for multi-disciplinary Starship and Super Heavy Booster tooling systems, and facilities infrastructure. This position will serve as a key technical resource, supporting project teams and fostering strong BIM practices throughout the project lifecycle.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Develop, maintain, and upgrade detailed 3D BIM models of mechanical systems (heating, ventilation, air-conditioning, ducting, fans/exhaust, air filtration systems, sensors, controls) using industry-standard software such as Revit, Navisworks, AutoCAD,or NX
- Own, draft, redline, and maintain mechanical schematics, diagrams, and shop drawings, and prepare related documentation while coordinating 3D model placement of mechanical systems with the system Responsible Engineers
- Integrate mechanical systems with architectural, structural, electrical, plumbing, and production tooling for Starship facilities in a safe, economical and reliable way. Lead coordination of mechanical systems into living facility models, owning end-to-end integration and mechanical documentation ownership
- Generate construction documents, piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs), schematics, isometrics and equipment schedules, and as-built drawings from BIM models to support bidding, procurement, on-site execution, and long-term reliability improvements for mechanical infrastructure and production systems
- Act as a liaison between project stakeholders, internal tooling teams, production leadership, responsible engineers, internal design and construction teams, and third-party consultants throughout the project life cycle
- Lead the mechanical coordination process: perform clash detection, coordinate models, drive deconfliction with other trades, host constructability reviews, and close issues early and rapidly in design and construction phases
- Support the development and maintenance of SpaceX BIM standards, protocols, and workflows for mechanical infrastructure; act as the primary technical resource for mechanical BIM issues
- Lead transition of mechanical BIM workflows (including data migration, process documentation, and training); actively drive continuous improvements and optimizations for team processes, quality improvements, faster build times, and lower maintenance
- Support review and interpretation of mechanical system studies, and field data; perform daily task prioritization and risk mitigation; participate in cross-functional meetings providing mechanical BIM expertise to inform design decisions
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering or construction management, engineering technology or related discipline; OR associates or vocational certification in mechanical design, construction drafting, or design technologies
- 1+ years of experience in a 3D mechanical or plumbing modeling
PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:
- Occupational trade school qualification or experience working in a mechanical technical role or in the mechanical field
- 3+ years of experience working with mechanical systems
- Working knowledge of the International Code Council (ICC) codes governing mechanical systems and ASHRAE fundamentals
- Proficiency with CAD-suite (NX) and Autodesk tools such as Revit, Navisworks, and/or SolidWorks
- Proficiency in clash detection, federated modeling, interdisciplinary coordination workflows, and constructability reviews for large-scale or high-rise projects
- Experience modeling mechanical systems in industrial environments
- Hands-on field experience overseeing mechanical systems installations
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
- This position is based in Starbase, TX and requires being onsite - remote work not considered
- Must be willing to travel to various SpaceX locations for mission critical projects
- Flexible to work extended hours and/or weekends to align with residential project deadlines and site operations
