#30DayMapChallenge Day 1, Points 📍

Mapbox AI Vehicle Tech Update November 1, 2026

Mapboxer James Piacentini created Third Places NYC, an interactive map built with Mapbox GL JS and deck.gl that helps New Yorkers discover the cafés, parks, libraries, and community spaces that bring people together.

Using OpenStreetMap data enriched with place attributes and community insights, the experience connects places with similar characteristics across NYC's five boroughs.

The project won the Narrative Community Map Award at State of the Map US 2026! 🏆

Why this matters for talent

A community mapping challenge entry is marketing content, not a hiring signal, but Mapbox consistently uses developer community engagement like this to build its talent funnel among engineers who already use its tools. Mapbox carries around 29 open roles on the jobs board.
