Preparing for the unexpected is an essential part of safety
New research from Waymo introduces a first-of-its-kind framework for autonomous vehicle incident-management exercises, translating established emergency-management practices into guidance tailored specifically to AV operations.
The framework covers the stages of exercise preparation, execution, and evaluation, and the range of exercise types, from workshops and tabletop scenarios to drills and full-scale exercises, emphasizing continuous learning, collaboration and an all-hazards approach to preparedness.
As autonomous technology scales, preparedness practices should mature alongside it.

Why this matters for talent
A general statement about preparing for the unexpected as part of safety carries little concrete news on its own. Waymo lists 363 openings on the jobs board, the largest autonomous vehicle employer tracked here, and candidates interested in AV safety engineering should look to its research publications, such as the sober driver baseline study, for more substantive hiring signal.
